I’m already lying about their age. Technically they will be 22 weeks on Monday but hey close enough. We went to the specialist today, lots of cute shots of the tadpoles. They are also lying diagonally across my belly. So heads on the right all those little feet on the left. That would explain the flurry of movement I’ve been experiencing. When I told the doctor I was worried about the lack of kicks on one side he said I was still a little early to be feeling a lot of movement. Well he doesn’t know MY kids because they are all over the place.

This will have to be quick since we are going out to dinner with our friends Kurt and Jeni. They are bringing their baby Grady who is 13 POUNDS at 8 weeks. Jeni is going to have biceps of steel from lifting him.

Quick run down:

They each weigh about 1 pound. My babies are rock stars when it comes to putting on weight. They are in the 60th percentile for a singleton, bigger for being a twin. And it is not due to my diabetes, he said they are just healthy.

Each about 12″ long

Loen is still on the bottom

When I asked how long I could work considering I was doing so well he still said October. I had to remind it WAS October. I got to bargain for the 2nd week of November as long as I am honest and stop working if I have any contractions or cramps.

Here are some of the best shots from the sonogram. The rest are on our flickr account.

Heads together. I’m sure they are conspiring already

Loen 3-D The bulge by her head is Derby through the membrane. I also want to point out that she doesn’t have a gnarly widows peak, her skull bones haven’t finished fusing and that is the cartilage between the bone. We had some comments on that one.

On this day, 8 years ago Tadd and I had our first date. Fun times, lots of 2 for 1 drink specials, Tadd actually dancing….like I said it was 8 years ago. It was quite fitting that today we were able to find out about our twins.

First we should preface it with our sonogram from last week. Yes, Tadd was pushing my OB’s buttons again

Today we saw the specialist. I got a little freaked out when I noticed the amnio tray set up next to me. We decided not to do the amnio after we saw the latest sonogram. Heartbeats looks good, no abnormalities that could be noticed. A lot of the markers that would show a genetic defect were absent. The doctor verified that we are having a BOY and a GIRL! We also got a 3D picture of twin B (Derby) but were unable to get one of twin A (Loen). The boy seems to be crowding the girl. Already acting like a boy, hogging space, taking over….Enjoy the pictures of our new little family

Twin B – Derby

Twin B – Derby

Twin A – Loen. I love this picture of her feet!

Yup, that’s a girl (Twin A – Loen)

Theres our boy (Twin B – Derby)

Hard to see but there is their two heads

Today we saw the specialist. We were supposed to do sequential testing for genetic defects, but I fell into the rare category of “We can perform the test if you’re diabetic or having twins. We cannot perform the test on a diabetic having twins”. At first that made no sense to me but I was told that the combo of the 2 increases the chance of a false negative result substantially. So why bother if the result is likely to be wrong. We were able to get the nuchal translucency measurement and the tadpoles were well within normal range. So our chances of a neural tube defect are 1:600. I’m ok with those odds. There was a wonderful 7 minute sonogram, but it was saved in a .VOB format that I cannot get onto youtube. If anyone out there is a A/V genius and wants to share the secret of converting the disk so I can upload it to youtube I would appreciate it. In the meantime here are the ultrasounds of the “boys”. The perinatologist refused to confirm the gender because he said it was not accurate until the 16th week of gestation. I almost opened my mouth and quoted a study from the New England Journal of Medicine that stated there was a 99% accuracy rate of gender identification by the 13th week of gestation, but I thought that would just look rude. Especially after I decided to start arguing about when I will have to go on maternity leave. At first he was saying some OB’s want you to stop work by the 20th week, which I scoffed at. He asked me how long I thought I was going to work. I said December or January, which was his turn to scoff at me and say “I was going to be generous and let you work till October”. Well see about that.
