The internet can be a wonderful and terrible thing all at once. Online shopping, wikipedia, blogs…all wonderful things. Then there is the other hand of looking up information and trying to decipher what is crap. There are so many schools of thought when it comes to raising kids these days. When the twins were still in the NICU I asked one of the neonatologists which preemie books I should buy and she said “None of them, if you have a question talk to us”. That could be taken with a grain of salt because I didn’t always agree with them but I valued much of their knowledge. Tadd would look things up online only to find the worst case scenario stories. I had that happen to me once and realized I couldn’t deal with it, so no more reading other peoples experiences unless Tadd had looked at it first and deemed it acceptable. I still haven’t bought any baby books. I try to use my own intuition and will call the doctor if there is anything I am unsure about. But who do you talk to re: carriers, car seats, bouncers and now bottles?? We originally started Loen on the Dr. Brown’s bottles on the suggestion from a NICU nurse and Derby liked any ol’ cheap bottle. With all the talk about Bisphenol A (BPA) in bottles I got a little worried. This is where the internet (for me at least) was helpful. I found this site, Safe Mama, that gives a wonderful list of BPA free bottles, sippy cups and teethers. Tadd and I decided to toss most of the bottles and start fresh with ones we knew for certain were BPA free. It could be crazy hype or it could be the new red dye #5. Where do you draw the line???

I too have just thrown out all the bottles I had that were not BPA free. I got the Evenflo Polypropylene bottles. There aren’t fancy or anything, but they were very inexpensive and Finn seems to have no problem with them. Our pediatrician recommended a book to us called Touch Points. I never really read it. I tend to go on intuiton and friends imput, but my husband really liked it and found it helpful. Just an fyi…

i feel for you…i was there….complete freak out about bottles…..i’d say if they can switch to glass than that’s great…..
Brent would like to add that tubings etc that NICU’s use have plasticizers (BPA is only one of them) in them. Got to love having a materials scientist as a hubby.

I’d say, talk to other moms and see what they used, or items they’d recommend. There’s nothing like actual moms to get the goods on…the goods!
What I often did regarding behavior, was watch parents that had children I enjoyed being around and then I’d ask specific questions about what they did to get there. That also occasionally covered gear questions as well.
