Aren’t there starving babies somewhere???

In regards to our overflowing freezer of breast milk a friend gave me the contact info for a local milk bank. I contacted them thinking how nice it would be to have at least one freezer be free of breast milk. Donate a gallon or two for those preemies who are less fortunate, a win-win situation. After filling out an extensive questionnaire I waited anxiously by the computer for the reply email that would instruct me on how to donate. Sadly that email never came. What did come was the following:

  • We received your online application and upon reviewing noticed a few things. According to our medical director, we are not able to accept mothers who are insulin dependent. Although the insulin is a replacement for something that happens naturally in the body, he has expressed multiple times, that we are just not able to do it. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause because we truly hate turning anyone away. We appreciate your understanding with this matter.

Great, I cant even give the stuff away. I have slowed down the amount I pump to every 6 hours and only give the babies fresh milk so that should hold off the freezer problem for awhile. We actually broke into some of the frozen milk the other day after I went out to lunch with my mom and had middle eastern food. Lets just say Derby was not happy with my meal choices. Loen also was a little upset as evidenced by her little flatulent symphony that night. Around 3 am Derby was so gassy and upset we made the decision to dump all the fresh milk and give them frozen. I spent the next 36 hours pumping and dumping till I was sure whatever I ate was out of my system. I’m not complaining, the twins have been great at home. Fairly good sleepers, not colicky (knock on wood) and not really sensitive to what I eat…except middle eastern food.

I’m sorry no one will take your milk! That seems like an awful waste, to me.

As for the upsetting ingredients in your milk: I’ve been there. I wasn’t “allowed” to eat curry or anything mildly spicy.

Oh the screaming! Nurse. Scream! Nurse. Scream!

Hava, you are a breast milk machine and all that wonderous human milk is a Good thing. Yes, your children will let you know about things in your diet that they don’t like. that gets better as they get older.
say hi to Tamie and try to enjoy some time off, away from the house while you have these great babysitters.
hi to Tadd to, oh, and your kids are quite photogenic.

congrats on bringing the babies home!
I had the same problem with my milk. I ended up throwing away most of my frozen milk because it eventually got too old. I took plenty of photos of the milk and cringed as the trash man threw it in the truck.

Hi Hava, Don’t worry - you will use all the milk you have! As their little appetites kick in, you’ll be using it up. Granted - Asher was a year old before the last of it was gone! Use the oldest stuff first, and don’t worry if it smells a little. It’s still good, and they’ll still drink it. Your milk doesn’t go bad! I hope you’re coming to Jeff’s wedding, so I can meet the superstars!

I agree, you will definitely use it eventually. I too had a small seperate freezer full. I slowed down my pumping too and all my frozen milk lasted me 4 months once they were home. They were 6 months old! Good luck to you! Hugs.
