Last night Tadd was able to hold Derby, he looked so excited. We actually had questioned bringing the camera up last night, finally I just said “Bring it, you never know when they are going to do something cute”. I am afraid when we are finally able to hold them in our arms we are going to forget the camera!
Anyways the twins night nurse is new to the floor. She has had the twins 2 nights in a row. She asked if we are involved in their care (not all parents are comfortable I guess) and if I would like to lift Derby while she changed his bed. Yes, I will admit I paused. My hands were already in the incubator taking his temperature, all I would need to do was take him from her. I turned and looked at Tadd. I told the nurse Tadd had called dibs (I bet she thinks we are weird). He looked at me and said “I saw you pause, you were going to hold him weren’t you?!” Tadd got to lift him up TWICE and hold him longer than I held Loen, not that I am counting or anything. We got some great pictures and the twins looked so comfortable when we left. On the ride home I started to feel a little jealous. Secretly I wanted to hold Derby. I cant be selfish but I’m their MOTHER. Don’t moms get to call first??? Tadd looked a little put out when I said this. They will be 5 weeks old tomorrow and that is the most contact we have had with them. I noticed some other micro-preemies parents got to hold their baby this past week. I asked Dr. Donnelly that I wasn’t being nosy but when do we get to keep up with the Joneses?? She said she wanted us to hold them as soon as possible but they are both so unstable when it comes to their oxygen levels. Loen gets upset and can take her most of the day to recover. This has been a long 5 weeks and we have so many more ahead of us.
Loen looking serious. It is like she is trying to decide how to redecorate her incubator.

Loen. All that looking around made her exhausted

Almost there:

FINALLY

Derby had his eyes open almost the whole time

So much excitement…I will now nap

The kangaroo care days are almost here! You will love it. I can’t wait for the good news. I’m glad your move and T-Day were good. Keeping you guys in my thoughts during your NICU journey!

Hava, I’d like to side with you on being able to hold Derby first, but I think Tadd was smart in calling dibs. On the bright side, pretty soon you’ll both be able to hold them A LOT.
One day you will even get to argue over who HAS to hold them. That will probably be at 4:30 am and they will probably have an exploded diaper…
Hooray for Derby!

Hava has actually already volunteered for the 4:30 am holdings by not sharing a friend’s baby with me the other evening, so no arguing in the future about that!

Tadd can you believe I cried when I read about it and again when I saw the pictures and look on your face - then I thought about when I first held you and it was wonderful. Hava did a great job in capturing the moment.
