Boring….just the way I like it

October 16th, 2007 · 14 Comments

Today was uneventful and in our little world that is a good thing. The perinatologist was in and said things were good so far. One of the biggest risks of a ruptured sac is the threat of infection. If Loen was to get an infection then Derby would get it also, not good odds there. We were essentially told the pregnancy would be over due to the risk of the mother becoming septic. So it has been good news that my temp has been running in the 98 – 99 range. Blood pressure and fetal heart rates are also looking good. This morning Loen was 140 BPM (beats per minute) and Derby was 135. He is a hard little guy to get a handle on as he likes to move all around as they are listening to his heart rate. He also likes to kick the contraction monitor when it is strapped on my belly, evidently it is cramping his style. Contractions have been minimal (we were told it is normal to have little ones throughout a pregnancy).

My dad left to go home this morning. It was nice to have my family here to just hang out and spend time with me as I’m lying in bed. You don’t have to entertain family, but their presence is reassuring. My mom and Souther are still here. My mom went and got me slippers so I can shuffle back and forth from the bathroom. I had been wearing the flips I wore to the doctors office on Friday, but slippers are much more cozy. I’ll have to post pictures of them soon. She got me a normal pair and then a fluffy leopard print with tassels pair. My mom says you gotta have “fun” slippers. The rest of the afternoon we just hung out, played Scattergories and watched “Peggy Sue Got Married”. Very low key kind of day. I’m hoping to have MANY low key days in the future.

Evidentially my lack of eating was worrying people, so Andy made a call to the hospital (since he is a benefactor) and I’ve been bumped to VIP status. Good Lord what a change in menu! The food is 1000 times better and if they don’t have something on the menu but you’re craving it they will try and make it. Dee made her wonderful ham salad and last night was my first real good meal since Thursday. I swear the babies were rejoicing because they were kicking a lot after dinner.

Here is the quick rundown:

  • The babies will be viable on Monday. If I go into labor before then there is nothing they can do. Come Monday the NICU team will do what they can to give them their best fighting chance. They will also give me betamethasone on Monday. That is a steroid that will kick the twins lung development into high gear. You cant receive it till you get to 24 weeks. It is 2 shots given 12 hours apart. The one down side is it can cause my blood sugar to soar to 600, which can be bad for the babies. Guess I’ll be taking a lot of blood tests and insulin on Monday.

  • We have 35 more days to go till we reach 28 weeks. The neonatologist said that babies born then have a 99% chance of having no lasting problems. We definitely want them to stay in longer than that though. For every day in the womb it is 2 days less in the NICU.

  • At 20 weeks amniotic fluid is made up almost exclusively from fetal urine. Even though Loens bag ruptured she will keep making more fluid. The bag will still leak but if I drink a lot of fluid (5-6 liters a day) she can make some cushion for herself! Anybody got suggestions for making water more appealing??

That is about it for today. Tadd went to dinner with my mom and brother. He refuses to leave my side unless someone is with me but I forced him out to eat. The nurses have been wonderful and I think that made it easier for him to leave tonight. It is 8:45 pm and I’m going to go to bed. All this lying around makes me exhausted! I told Tadd to remind when I complain about not getting enough sleep later that I was going crazy when all I could do was lie around and sleep.

So many people have offered to come and visit. We appreciate the offers but at this critical time we like to just keep things quiet but thank you to everyone for all the well wishes and prayers. We have gotten so many positive comments, some from people we don’t even know. It definitely warms our hearts to know we have so many people rooting for our little tadpoles.

Yeah for Monday!!! We will keep saying prayers and positive thoughts for everyone! Remember that I had those steriod shots for Grant and he came out screaming at 32 wks!!! And don’t twins develop faster than singletons?

Call me when your bored and want to chat about all of the ABC tv programming that we are both watching on the computer (me while I pump!)…..i’m really liking the new one…Pushing Daisies….right now i’m watching Dancing with the stars cause I’ve watched everything else…..well, except for The Bachelor…i just can’t subject myself to that….

Hooray for Monday! Each day, a little closer to a new goal. That’s great. I’m very excited for you as things continue to improve.

    Knowing that there’s a VIP menu…almost as great. : )

BTW, I thought I had it bad with 4 liters of water daily. Phew! The only thing I can recommend is having someone add a bit of fruit juice to your water or assorted fruit slices. Personally, I went through a lot of ice and seriously watered down juice to keep up my water intake.

    Hang in there!

Dear Tadd, Hava, Loen and Derby,
Just wanted you to know that prayers for the twins are going nationwide as of today. I have a friend that is contacting this nationwide prayer group and you will be at the top of the list. I am so excited. These babies are popular already. Also, I have personally asked the Lord to hold your babies til they are ready to be born and I will continue to ask for this everyday. Love, Carol Walsh

What great news to wake up to. You must remind the tadpoles when they are 4 how much fun “boring” can be.

    Hi Hava…

I like the water in the wine glass idea :) but also, if you’re allowed to have this, crystal lite makes a little packet of stuff you can add to a bottle of water… it’s pretty good… or, maybe just a slice of orange or lemon!

My friend in France is also pregnant and was also on your site… she loved it.

Best wishes! Let me know if you’d like some trashy novels to read… I have a few here I can bring over.

    Take care!

Crystal Light single packets in the water! Those made water taste better for me when I was getting sick of it!

I’m impressed with your food situation. I was only in for a few days, but I didn’t do too well with the eating thing either. I wonder why hospitals make such nasty food?

Thank you for the wonderful update, Hava. Seems you can drink more water (at a time) if it’s from a sports-bottle-sprout (& you’re sweating) … or maybe from one of those wine pouches that pours into your mouth … I’m just joking … but water definitely has to be tasty & chilled/iced/refrigerated … Love you sweet granddaughter.

Go, Babies, Go!! Although I trained for months to be a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader (age of 5) I never quite understood how to cheer. So there you have it, my cheer to the little ones with all that training.

    Hava & Tadd~
Thinking about all four of you a lot lately. You’re in my bedtime prayers. Slowly but surely…one day at a time. Hang in there Hava!

  • 12 Kim // Oct 17, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Just wanted to let you know I’ve been thinking of you all! (Michelle has been keeping me informed.) If there’s ever anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re all sending out lots of love and good wishes for the 4 of you.
    Love,
    Kim

Great news, Havie! We will keep the prayers coming. Your ham salad supply must be running low, so you’d better let me know what you’re craving next! I made a German apple rum cake today and was going to send some with Andy, but I was afraid I would get in trouble with the nurses (due to the sugar content). I know the little bebes would have been very excited, though. Get lots of rest and keep drinking that water. The best suggestion I can give you is orange or lemon slices in the water (think Coral Casino). I think I might have to try some of that Crystal Light! Sleep well Hava and little babalas! XOXO Dee (Andy and the Boys, too!)
