The frozen novelty aisle at Vons

August 17th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Last week I was craving an It’s-Its. If you’re from the SF Bay Area you know what I’m talking about. It is an oatmeal cookie/vanilla ice cream/dipped in chocolate, party for your mouth. www.itsiticecream.com When we were kids driving from Hayward to San Francisco we would pass the It’s It factory and see the big sign for them. I wanted some SOOOO badly, unfortunately they are not available down here. I looked on the website and considered ordering myself a box. That is until I got to the part about one case being $84. So that will have to wait until I visit my parents next week. I decided to head over to Vons to see what else could be substituted for an It’s-It. Why is it called the frozen novelty aisle? I just don’t understand that. After looking at lots of different flavors and ice cream sandwiches I decided I didn’t want anything. Pregnancy can cause some mood swings, you know? As we were leaving I saw lemonade bars and I thought that would ease some of my ice cream depression. Anyways we got home and I put the box in the freezer….where I promptly forgot about it. That is until today. It is hot and ashy in Santa Barbara.

Sunrise over Leadbetter Beach during Zaca Fire. (That is smoke, not clouds)

We have all the windows closed due to all the ash in the air from the Zaca Fire, so it is hot in our apartment. I;m too lazy to leave the house so I’ve been sitting in front of the fan being a slug. Then I remembered the lemonade bars. They were no It’s-It but they worked. It reminded me of my dad always buying OJ popsicles when we were little. I wanted him to get the popsicles that looked like a missile or Pink Panther with gumdrop eyeballs not those healthy 100% orange juice popsicles. I could have made those at home with an ice cube tray and some toothpicks. I enjoyed my frozen novelty and did a little reminiscing……
