Week 13

August 7th, 2007 · No Comments

Today we saw the specialist. We were supposed to do sequential testing for genetic defects, but I fell into the rare category of “We can perform the test if you’re diabetic or having twins. We cannot perform the test on a diabetic having twins”. At first that made no sense to me but I was told that the combo of the 2 increases the chance of a false negative result substantially. So why bother if the result is likely to be wrong. We were able to get the nuchal translucency measurement and the tadpoles were well within normal range. So our chances of a neural tube defect are 1:600. I’m ok with those odds. There was a wonderful 7 minute sonogram, but it was saved in a .VOB format that I cannot get onto youtube. If anyone out there is a A/V genius and wants to share the secret of converting the disk so I can upload it to youtube I would appreciate it. In the meantime here are the ultrasounds of the “boys”. The perinatologist refused to confirm the gender because he said it was not accurate until the 16th week of gestation. I almost opened my mouth and quoted a study from the New England Journal of Medicine that stated there was a 99% accuracy rate of gender identification by the 13th week of gestation, but I thought that would just look rude. Especially after I decided to start arguing about when I will have to go on maternity leave. At first he was saying some OB’s want you to stop work by the 20th week, which I scoffed at. He asked me how long I thought I was going to work. I said December or January, which was his turn to scoff at me and say “I was going to be generous and let you work till October”. Well see about that.
