Ever since I found out we were going to have a baby I was trying to think up a cool way to tell our parents. We wanted to be able to tell them all personally but with family in Northern and Southern California, Arizona and Michigan it would’ve been hard. So I came up with the idea of mailing a little announcement with the sonogram picture in it. Tadd came up with the rattle idea. After ordering the rattles, buying the boxes, sewing the lavender sachets (which the smell made me nauseous) they were all ready to go. We just needed the sonogram.

Yes I’m quite pleased with my craftiness
We got the sonogram on the 2nd. I folded over copies of the sonogram picture, wrote ‘OPEN’ on the front and taped them inside the lid of the box. I overnighted the boxes to my parents that day. I was constantly checking the FedEx website to see if it had been delivered yet. My mom, who is a nurse, was working the night shift that night. I wanted to be sure she opened the package before she left. I was going to have lunch with my friend Anne (who already knew about the twins and the FedEx delivery), and as I was driving out to meet her I called to say I was on my way. She told me that the package had been delivered. I picked up Anne then I called my mom on speaker phone. Unfortunately I woke her up, but the weird thing is she never picks up the phone when she is sleeping so I was surprised she did today. I think I blurted out “There is a package at the front door, get it and open it while I’m on the phone” But imagine that said really fast in one long run on sentence. My mom sounded really groggy and was asking me questions like what was I doing and how was Tadd. I had no time for chit-chat, I wanted her to open the damn package! My mom asked my younger sister to get the package and bring it to her. So I’m waiting, mentally calculating how long it would take for her to walk outside and then come upstairs. Well it was taking too long, so I asked my mom what was going on. I heard her yell at Bianca, who it turned out thought it was a good time to water some of the flowers in the front before bringing the package to my mom. I was really going crazy with anticipation. Then my mom puts my nephew Iain on the phone, who I’m usually ecstatic to talk to but I really wanted to hear my mom as she opened the package. Well Iain (who is 2) hung up on me. I had to call back, thank god she was still struggling with the FedEx plastic envelope. Finally she gets it open and starts yelling “Are you pregnant? ARE YOU PREGNANT?!” My mom seems to have thought I couldnt get pregnant because of my advanced age (34) and diabetes. Well I showed her. I told her to open the white paper in the lid. She was quiet for a second then said “Twins?? Did you have these implanted?” Now I understand I had woken her up and she was groggy, but I dont know why she would think I would have IVF and not tell her. There was lots of yelling and shouting. My mom kept saying “Oh my God”and I could hear Iain repeating her “Oh God, Oh God, Oh God”. It was so great to finally tell her. My dad who works around the corner didnt know yet. I had left him a message telling him to stop by the house ASAP to pick up a package, but I dont think he checked his message. I talked to my mom a little longer. Told her that while the due date is February 12 (her birthday) I probably wouldn’t last that long. I got off the phone so I could eat lunch. I didnt hear my phone ring 15 minutes later, but my dad left me a message. He said my mom called him and told him to come to the house right away and was crying. He thought maybe a wild animal had gotten in or something bad happened because she was crying. He rushed home and my mom gave him the box. He didnt know what was going on and asked little Iain to help him open it. Now here is the part that I love. He immediately assumed that it came from my younger brother and his girlfriend. What is it with people thinking I cant get pregnant??? So my mom told him it was from me. He left me a message saying congratulations. Instead of saying “Oh God, Oh God” when he found out, he was saying “Oh Man, Oh Man…Twins” so on my message I can hear Iain repeating my Dad “oh man oh man” Very cute. If I can figure a way to get it off my phone and post it I will.
Here it is!
